Discussions on Policy

Leon Brittan

The challenges and problems facing Britain in the 1980s are very different from those of the 1970s. The political agenda for the 1990s is starting to be formed by a new generation with new priorities and values, the products of economic success and high expectations. What is now needed is to ensure that economic success continues; to deal with the social issues that have not yet been the subject of reform; and to handle those challenges constructively and effectively.

This book is a contribution to the debate about how these objectives can be achieved. It is the result of discussions of six policy areas by Leon Brittan and a large group of specialists at a series of seminars held at the Policy Studies Institute in 1988.
