The Handling of Complaints Against Doctors
Report by the Policy Studies Institute for the Racial Equality Group of the General Medical Council
Isobel Allen, Elizabeth Perkins and Sharon Witherspoon
This report details findings of research carried out by the Policy Studies Institute on behalf of the Racial Equality Group. It examines whether racial discrimination is present in the application of internal Council procedures, particularly in the handling of complaints or other information received about doctors.
Drawing on detailed statistical analysis, interviews and existing material, the report begins with a description of the main procedures involved, and then examines the evidence gathered for the statistical analysis of complaints. The third section discusses the findings from the first two sections of the report, and in the fourth section the authors make recommendations and suggest options for action based on the findings of the report.
