The proportion of new mothers returning to paid work within one year of giving birth increased markedly during the 1980s. Women not only re-enter the labour market in greater numbers soon after having a child, they more frequently go back to full-time working hours, to the same job, with the same employer. This report gives the details of a survey carried out to examine how far mothers were able to maintain their employment ties over the different stages of their children's lives, and to document their attitudes to work, contributions to household finances and other related issues.
