Labour Mobility in the European Union
Heather Rolfe and Angela ByreThe development of economic union within Europe involves the removal of all barriers to competition in the supply of goods and services between European partners. Closer integration of European labour markets is central to this process.
This study, based on in-depth case studies across five industrial sectors, was carrie out to see how employers have been developing policies to take advantage of developments within the EU. Three main questions are addressed:
- How are companies adapting their recruitment and transfer policies in the Single European Market?
- What factors encourage mobility within the EU, and what discourage it?
- What are the future prospects for mobility and the implications for employers' policies and mobile employees' pay and benefits ?
