Review of DETR needs for longitudinal research to inform housing and regeneration policies

Background and aims

The review is designed to answer four questions with respect to housing and regeneration policies:

• What are the particular strengths (and weaknesses) of longitudinal data?
• What are the key information requirements for housing and regeneration policy that could be addressed by longitudinal information?
• To what extent could these needs be met through exploiting data that already exists or could be enhanced, for example, by adding in a longitudinal element and/or supporting analysis?
• To the extent that analysis of existing data is unable to meet these information requirements, what types of new longitudinal data and analysis should the Department be supporting?

Project design

The review will be developed by (a) having discussions with policy customers in DETR to clarify the needs for longitudinal data, (b) by considering these requirements in the light of the framework developed in a more general review of longitudinal data for the Office for National Statistics. Importance of research The research is intended to produce potential recommendations to the DETR to develop research data and other related resources to support housing and regeneration policy.
