Background

In Autumn 2001 the DfES launched seven pilot programmes to enhance the impact of Adult Basic Skills courses. The purpose of the research is to assess the effectiveness of this new provision, by making comparisons with existing 'standard' provision and by comparing each type of Extension with the others. The research will consider learning outcomes, employment outcomes, and intermediate outcomes such as increased employability or increased commitment to self-development.

Study Design

The project includes both quantitative and qualitative elements. The quantitative work will include analysis of pre- and post-test scores, and a two-stage survey. The first stage of the survey will take place during the courses, with the second nine months later. A comparison group of those taking standard basic skills courses will be obtained in each area. The qualitative research will consist of interviews with students and educational staff during the courses, and case studies of two Extensions.

Importance of Research

The results of the research will assist the DfES in the future development of national provision for Adult Basic Skills education.
