Title: Expert advice on an RCT design for 2010 Drug Pilot

Summary

The Department for Work and Pensions has commissioned PSI to provide expert advice on the design of a randomised control trial for the evaluation of the 2010 Drug Pilots. The work will comprise:

• Full justification for the use of random assignment, though also pointing out some of the limitations and practical issues;
• A provisional research design for 2010 pilots, which should not be considered ‘final’ but help the department think through the issues and come up with an approach that will work
• Some initial power tests and sample size calculations - with a short annex explaining the methodology and assumptions used

This is a desk-based feasibility study which aims to encourage the use of rigorous research methods in the evaluation of government programmes.
