Obituary: former PSI Director Bill Daniel

Bill Daniel, the director of Policy Studies Institute from 1986 to 1993, died on 12 October 2015.

Bill made his name through his research on racial discrimination in the 1960s, research that was frequently referenced in debates on the Race Discrimination Act 1968. Not only were people of Asian and West Indian backgrounds more likely to experience discrimination, but Bill’s work revealed how this discrimination was experienced in different ways. After a short period at the University of Bath, Bill joined Policy and Economic Planning (PEP), which became Policy Studies Institute when it merged with the Centre for the Study of Social Policy (CSSP) in 1978, with Bill serving as Deputy Director from 1981 before stepping up to become Director. Bill was appointed CBE in 1993.

David J Smith has written an obituary for Bill for the Guardian, available here.
