Video: Cities and the Climate Change Challenge
Professor Fred Steward recently spoke at the annual Making Transitions Happen event, which took place in Brussels on 2-3 December 2014. Making Transitions Happen is one of eight platforms under the EU’s main climate innovation initiative, Climate-KIC.
In his lecture, Professor Steward examined the role of cities in climate-change mitigation. While national discussion of climate-change action is stymied by fears about not being able to show any short-term advantage to voters, he argued, at the city level the benefits are more tangible and immediate. Thus, cities are an important level at which to implement mitigation policies. In turn, he asks, what should the role of cities be in climate-change negotiations, with particular consideration to the COP21 talks in Paris at the end of 2015?
