Background, summary and aims

Background and Aims

This project for World Wildlife Fund (WWF), in conjunction with the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) and the Royal Society of Protection of Birds (RSPB) is an example of the modelling consulting projects undertaken by PSI. This project undertakes very deep reduction scenarios (>80% reduction) of UK CO2 emissions.

Project Design

Model development on the MARKAL-MACRO (M-M) model is focused on incorporating insights on international aviation, international biomass markets, and the role on intermittent renewables. Model outputs will give insights into the costs and optimal strategies for long term evolution of the UK energy sector under very stringent reduction in UK CO2 emissions

Importance of Research

Findings will investigate uncertainties of such a major overhaul of the UK energy sector and be directly relevant for the consideration on long term UK climate mitigation policy through the forthcoming Climate Change Bill.
